What went wrong? Chlorine gas

Hi I made up Chlorine gas as per CLEAPSS instructions. The teacher put a small piece if sodium metal in a deflagrating spoon into the gas and instead of the gas turning white it went brown. What did I do wrong?

The chlorine reacts with the iron in the def spoon to give iron chloride, which is brown, there is a method on the CLEAPSS website involving placing the sodium on a housebrick and tipping the jar of chlorine over the top of it which will give a nice white solid.

Yes! she has done it on the brick before! I thought it might be the spoon. Thanks!
