What is that smell?

All this week there has been a god awful smell as you come in the main school doors into the foyer, reception and office area, kind of sewage odour to it.

I'd been wondering what it was and overheard someone say it was the drains and they were being looked in to (there are toilets next to the foyer so assumed it was from there)
Today the smell was particularly awful as I walked through, so strong, figured they hadn't solved the drain issue but thought nothing more of it.

Anyway about lunch time I had a phone call from the finance lady to apologise that they had discovered the source of the smell and it was in fact my 30 lambs hearts, 2 plucks and 25 eyeballs that had been delivered on Friday and left next to the radiator in the main office :surprised:

So for nearly 7 days the poor admin team have been sharing their room with a warm festering box of rotting lamb offal!

I have no idea why it took them so long to work out the smell was coming from the mystery box in the corner or why no one bothered to find out who the delivery was for.

What's worse is we had parents evening last night and the parents had to come through reception with that smell!

The offending offal had now been disposed of and I'm getting a new order apparently.

Must admit it gave me a bit of a giggle today

:laughing::laughing: My god the smell must have been awful.

Fortunately our receptionist is very aware of anything we order and she calls as soon as it arrives. She is a bit squeamish and really doesn't want anything next to her:p

It got a mention from the Head in briefing this morning that, whilst meant light hearted, felt somewhat like I was being told of for not collecting the parcel sooner (because I'm clearly psychic so know when my parcels arrive without being told  ). Oh well.

If you don't get told it arrives how do you know? Rummages for his crystal ball

I have to admit I do check at the end of the day by having a walk past reception, but Finance have stopped putting the name of the department who ordered things in the order so everything is for Finance. Makes life interesting.

Years ago on returning from my annual leave, I found one of the prep rooms had a terrible stench. The caretaker informed me that the drains had been renewed over the summer and it might take a few days to clear.
Eventually as the smell was getting worse we found that the chest freezer in the prep room had failed.
The freezer was filled with all sorts, mainly eyes, plucks, rats and many items too festered to identify.
Nobody would come and take it away. So we used the caretakers cart and wheeled the freezer to the back end of the playing field and disposed of the contents in a deep hole. The freezer was taken away by the council after we had disinfected it.
Happy days.....

We had an issue a few years back when the factory next to our school burnt down. The school was closed for several months due to possible asbestos contamination and the electricity was shut off. Yep the freezer was full of dead stuff. Thankfully they got a specialist cleaning team in to deal with it and we got a new freezer out of it too

Reception are usually really good at letting me now I have a parcel but for some reason this one didnt have my name on so rather than asking finance who it was for they just ignored it  It even had 'FROZEN' on in big red letters and a picture of a heart. It took quite some effort to ignore all the evidence :laughing:

They probably told Food Tech who shrugged it off because they hadn't ordered anything....

I accidentally sabotaged another department's YPO order at the start of term because it sounded like stuff we might have ordered (my colleague generally does the stationary orders) and YPO called with a query about it as some borders were out of stock. Couldn't find her paperwork (turned out we hadn't put our order in) and they'd just got our extension from thin air. Still none the wiser whose order I sabotaged.

I had a similar situation with some eyeballs a few years ago. They sat in the staff room (not a place I usually have time to visit) for several days with teachers complaining about the smell! They were clearly marked as refrigerate on arrival.
And then this summer maintenance told me they would be turning off the power to our building for a few days at some unspecified time. "Can you let me know when you do this because I've got lots of dead stuff in the freezers that'll need to be moved"
Unfortunately they can't hear a word I say.....
