Universal Indicator

Hi all,

Just a quick question, where do you all store your bought in universal indicator liquid? I know its made in ethanol so does it get stored in the flammables cupboard? Here we have it stored in our small locked chemical store but just on a shelf and not sure if this is correct.

Thanks

Yup, we store ours in the flammables for the reasons you outlined

If in doubt pull up the CLEAPSS stocklist E233 and store it with the same code they use and if it's no on there copy the bottle symbols

Flammable liquids for the stock bottles, Shelving in main chem cupboard for class sets (UI diluted 50:50- presume much less flammable and in much smaller quantities)

We store all ours in the flammable cupboard, even the diluted 50:50 UI. I have just started putting ours in small 15ml plastic bottles. Found there is less waste and less contamination. I've even put the biuret, benedicts and Iodine in these little dropper bottles. Plus on amazon they work out at a few pennies per unit.

I assume you buy those eye dropper ones? I've bought some of those 125ml plastic flip ones on philip haris and found them to be useful but at £10.50 for 10 it's a bit much.

Have you got a link to the dropper bottles you buy ? I wanted to get some more recently and all the ones I could find were 4x the price we paid last time !

Thanks all yea we have moved it all into the flammables cupboard. I have always been told to just pour from that stock bottles into smaller bottles, do you all dilte it down 50:50? and if so in water?
Thanks

You're right- I've been CLEAPSSing, and somewhere (can't re-find it..) it said 20% dilution not treated as flammable - UI is 66% (bought stock), so I'll dilute a little more to get storage ok. Not enough room in my FL cupboard to put the student sets away.
Though Student safety sheet also says no risk, so not sure even that's necessary- I've more Flammable liquid in a single bottle of Gin at home than I have here, not in the stock bottle, at a higher %age too...

Spoke to CLEAPSS about this today and spoke to an advisor and he said that if storage is an issue then most of the indicators are safe to store in chemical store. He told me rule of thumb is below 60% alcohol should be fine anything above this needs to be in flammables cabinet. The only indicator he suggested to check is the phenolphthalein as this is made up in a high concentration of ethanol.
