The question about shorts in the lab is interesting, do you also ban girls wearing skirts?
Exactly. No difference between a girl/woman being in a skirt or dress to a boy/man being in shorts. I'm all for H&S but sometimes it gets a bit ridiculous!
Health and safety!!! applied to teachers too novel idea which they need to be reminded every so often as they may overlook it on occasion ,,

In the covid guidance about kids being in labs all day - GL353 which was published 8 years later and so supersedes that
typically skirts are not allowed also if they don't pass below the length of a lab coat
Cant say this is specific to schools as it seems pretty much anything goes when the mood arises but in uni and industry labs this was my xp.

About 30 years ago there was a sex equality tribunal argument about a company's "attire" policy as (a) ladies could wear "shorts" of many styles (b) ladies could wear shorter skirts and (c) ladies could wear "shorter than ankle length trousers" of various styles and lengths without apparent concern. Why then should men have to wear full length trousers? The case was upheld and shorts were allowed for all.
Nowadays I don't even think that would get to a tribunal as gender equality is so much stronger - I could turn up in a mini skirt and *nobody* should question it (except those with eyesight and a sense of decency!) The only reasonable way around this would be to insist on ankle length attire for all.
