Should training an apprentice be a reasonable argument for a pay raise?

The school I'm at is currently building a new building with more labs and a prep room and I've heard through the grape vine that there might be potentially an apprentice technician being employed and I would direct assumingly being the only tech and senior. I don't know the specifics since nothing is set in stone but I feel like if this were to happen I might argue I should get a pay increase/job description change for it; would that seem reasonable or am I overthinking it?

Well, I think once you know more details you should find out if you are actually going to be line managing them. If yes, then the case for a pay rise is easy. If not, then it's a typical grey area where your responsibility will not increase (formally) but your workload in practice will because they're going to be glued to you until they find their own two feet. You could refer to your job description and say that it mentions nothing about training apprentices to justify a pay rise, but I think you're better off arguing to be a senior technician and line managing them.

I think if you are training someone so that they can earn a qualification, rather than just showing a new tech the ropes, then you could argue for a pay rise.

First check your job description, if there is nothing in there then take it to HR/ BM and ask for job description review with the new tasks set out and that you would like a pay uplift. Then the ball is in their court.

It's a grey area. I found myself in the same situation and asked for a job regrading - I got a new job title (lead technician) and a substantial pay increase. As far as I'm concerned, our skills and knowledge are worth something - if they want us to pass that knowledge on to trainees, they need to pay us to do it. Just be mindful that it will come with line management responsibilities. Good luck!
