shopping

Can anyone enlighten me why technician's are responsible for purchases? Always seems to be in the job description but not sure why it's often a sole technician responsibility when the teachers could just as easily purchase 'fresh'/consumable items?
I persuade the teachers to get their 'highstreet' stuff for themselves wherever possible !
There's no petty cash float in the school,
& the modest 'float' available in my own bank account is my own business !

Have you ever seen the result when a teacher is allowed to buy their own stuff? It amazes me the variety of such things as lemon juice and iron tablets when selected by teachers. Varieties not previously known to techs tend to appear, usually not even in the same category of those things they went to get. Aspirin for paracetamol for example...
I can only imagine what they would come back with  Makes sense as you say we know what we're buying and will source the most cost effective

Dammit man! I'm a technician, not a magician!

Same here. I don't drive, and my back issues make something as simple as walking to, around and from the supermarket uncomfortable to agonising depending on the day. So where possible, I tell teachers that if we don't have it in, they must supply it themselves. I tried relenting this year but that didn't work, so I'm reinstating it again. I'm the worst-paid in the department. The financial burden should not be mine.

I think teachers should buy supermarket stuff and personally don't believe in using my own money or personal time!

Its not in our job description here so as I mentioned earlier in the thread we usually tell the teachers to get their own stuff. We do have a department debit card though so nobody has to be out of pocket. Sometimes one of us techs will go if its a trip to Tesco where we need quite a few items, and we always find that milk, tea bags and biscuits for the prep room have accidentally fallen into the shopping basket too. :vampire:

Our county now has an Eletronic system to refund us anything we buy anc scan in the receipts to prove it. But we don't like doing this, so we run a secret petty cash pot from the last year as the site is now apparently cashless.

I'm assured its so the budget is managed. However I was also told that we need to generate a purchase order for the petty cash items, with approval in advance. I did reply that I can't know the cost of lamb's hearts, etc, which are sold by weight. Or is get from a supplier at about 10x price.
that's why you have a petty cash or expenses form, signe by you and the budget holder.

Ah... never ever do it on your time

If you absolutely must do it, either leave early to grab it on the way home or come in late to do it then
Or (and this one'll change stuff PDQ) charge them the overtime

I just do it when doing my weekly shop. if given late notice they have to get it themselves. If it's something I can't get when I am getting my weekly shop and I haven't got time during the week to go elsewhere it isn't bought.
Happy to do it with my weekly shop because if I go out during the week I often pick up shopping for home - swings and roundabouts!!

They really don't know what a science department wants do they? I had to order in 3kgs of cornflour (bath bombs, STEM) only to be told it was cheaper at farm foods. Which is nowhere near me. Told them they could go get it or the order stood. I believe the finance assistant went in the end.
In a previous workplace, the finance manager told me that the Potassium Iodide which I had ordered via a reputable supplier was cheaper to purchase on Amazon. I stared at her for a bit longer than a moment, seeking the beginning of a wry smile, which didn't materialise. At that point I realised that she was actually being serious. After I had explained to her the potential pitfalls of this approach, I said remind me never to ask you to nip out for some aspirin ... :thief:

I refuse to buy stuff. I tell them I don't have business use on my car insurance so I won't be covered if there is an accident. One of the other Techs does it.

I actually like doing the shopping - I go during the day and feel like I've been freed! I also do the shopping for food tech.

I hate shopping so do it through Asda.com, if I can get it in one of my shops they can have it, I put in a petty cash claim when I think it's reached my limit they usually pay quickly.
