I thought I would see what the dictionary says. It gives both pronunciations. Any German speakers amongst us? It is named after a German scientist
I did think it could be pronounced like the surname but then when I realised he was German, I thought they would more likely pronounce it pet-ri, than pee-tri.There was an Archaeologist Flinders Petrie who was a Pee-tri, maybe that is where they heard it. His name always annoys me when I hear it!
