Petri dish pronunciation

We were having a debate on how you should pronounce petri dish. I always say pet-ri (with the pet said like pet dog) but my colleague says pee-tri. Does anyone know the correct way to say it?

I did think it could be pronounced like the surname but then when I realised he was German, I thought they would more likely pronounce it pet-ri, than pee-tri.
