Mind-numbingly bored!!! Need a new challenge!

I know - this was just picked up randomly and pasted - no-one asked me what I did/do or what the job entails...
i guess its to allow the catchall of "any other requests".
Just to clarify I HAVE NEVER DONE A DUTY and I would also be put off by that request in the jd... totally with you on that one @Techno

there are a lot of things in the jd that I don't actually do. this is definitely copied and pasted from somewhere, as half the stuff doesn't apply to anything I have done here.
Here they reviewed the JD with me after offering someone a job.

During Covid19, when the school partially re-opened, we had very few duties to do, so after I spent a few weeks organising the whole of the prep area, labelling it all, collating it all, re-building a dozen things and making new resources, I ended up soo bored I ended up doing every, single training course on our local training system. That's including the ones with zero relevance like; Prescription Drugs Delivery, UN Convention on the Rights of a Child Awareness, Emergency Rest Centre Training, etc...

My annual review is going to be amusing (they skipped last years)
"what training have you done since our last review..... HA!"

Hi all,

I currently work in a secondary school in a deprived area of Birmingham. The calibre of students we have are causing major issues for me and i'm really dumbing down the practical's. Im a lone tech with quite a few labs to oversee, but hardly anyone wants to do any practical work, as the behaviour of the kids is so bad.
I find myself setting up practical's and then staff not even getting round to using them as kids couldn't be trusted.

IM BORED!!! Busy.......Really Busy, but not with anything remotely related to my area of study. I find im more of a dogsbody than a science technician.
I spent years studying for a bioscience degree and i am finding myself absolutely, mind-numbingly, bored with the level of work.

anyone else in the same boat???
i feel like jumping ship but this place is handy for me at the moment with it being close to home and term time.

Do need a new challenge tho!
any suggestions as to how to implement better use of my brain?!
You are obviously too smart for the job!

Try the OU for a P/T refresher or related course, then you'll be using your brain &, when you are ready to jump ship, you'll be up to date...

Sign up to openlearn and do some free OU courses? You get certificates at the end. Then you don't feel like your time is totally wasted. Plus it all ads to your CPD. https://www.open.edu/openlearn/

I did that in Sept too, its fab, the paint is a little easily damaged I did three layers and then a varnish - I used car spray varnish as had some spare - it really helps.
Just put the rods in a conical flask with water from kettle and get a really good easily practical.
I've got thermochromic paint on lolly sticks, but I'm going to see if I can raid physics for metal rods. Do you use different metals or just rely on coloured paint? If it's just colour I could cut up ( and blunt end) of some wire hangers.
nice little one for science club

The practical is usually comparing the conductivity of different metals, so you would need different metal rods. Or you could compare other materials - lolly stick, glass rod, plastic something (disposable inoculating loop ?)

Yup we normally do that anyway, but I'll make a set with the paint now. Cheers!

I've been in industrial R&D & QC laboratories plus a few years in hospital aseptic pharmacy until joining a school in Sept 21. Now in my second year I really like it, so much easier and less hassle than being an industrial lab supervisor. I work in a very deprived area, in Manchester, which comes with it's own behaviour issues which also often results in cancelled practical work. But, I wouldn't change it for the world, the teachers I work with are great and the team spirit is well and truly alive (probably down to the kids behaviour, we need to stick together). The above job ad and salary is appalling, especially for a senior position. Pro rata I personally as a non senior Tech am 5k over that, although looking at job descriptions out there I'm already taking on senior rolls. That coupled with the holidays & pension is why I'm staying put until 60, so six more years to go

I suppose it doesn't have to be rods of the metals; sheet metal strips would be fine, so long as they are equivalent dimensions....?

I'd bet stripped metals would be easier to paint; if they're sturdy enough not to be bent. The rods we have are hard to bend. Depends how thick you have them.

Exactly the reason I left my old job to take a Tech's role. Too many kids, and although the money is less than I used to earn, I was paying out the difference and more for after school clubs anyway.
In fact 4 of the kids are in the school I work in!
Thats another great reason....you can keep an eye on them!! ;)

I won an innovation competition run by one of the suppliers 10 years ago with my idea for a conductivity beaker alternative.
We did used to use them at that school and the teachers liked it, and introduced it to my next school too.
I wonder if it could be adapted to make use of the thermochromic paint.

Love it.
I think you can adapt it by painting the tops with thermochromic paint. In theory it should work and would be even less clearing up and prepping as you get rid of the wax altogether. Students would just need to time how long it takes to change colour.

yeah that's what I was thinking. They don't do conduction as a class practical at the school i'm at now but I reckon if I made one and showed it to them it would peak their interest.
Just need to buy some thermochromic paint now.

thank you!

i got a 1st class bioscience degree a couple of years ago, but as the course was not accredited by the IBMS i have found i am unable to get a biomedical science job.

plus, i really enjoy the practical side of this job and the tinkering with things, thinking outside the box on how to adapt things.
