Looks like there are a few cyclists on the forum so thought I'd share my New Bike Day

I commute daily (6 miles each way) on a similar but older Ridgeback, although I have 'gears in a can' (8 speed Alfine hub gears).
I am a mere novice just 4 miles each way !! However at my previous school it was six miles with many hills , I was super fit !

I miss those days - 11K round trip home-work-home, 12 years of that commute. My recovery rate was really good, then I got new job nearby, a walk now it takes 15 mins at a relaxed pace. Miss the cycling but don't miss the inclement weather in winter!!

Nothing beats new bike day! May you have many happy years together :D. I would totally cycle commute to work if it made sense but I have less than 1 mile/ ~15 mins walk from home to school and back everyday. It's just not worth getting the bike out it's so close so I save my riding for weekends and holidays

I also cycle to work but it is only 3 km each way - it takes less time than driving and trying to find a parking space. There's nothing more satisfying than overtaking a Porsche, Maserati or Range Rover whilst they are stuck in traffic and I fly past in the cycle lane. Actually there is - overtaking them several times on the same journey!

Nice bike, hope you enjoy being out and about on it.

I used to cycle a lot, but the roads, cars and especially the buses around here are awful and you really take your life in your hands, so moved over to walking.

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy your new steed.

Keen cyclist here too, 13 miles round trip to work rain or shine. Barely even see a car for most it as well, I feel very lucky to have a such a great commute.

These are screen grabs of my view of a double decker bus as it overtook me on my cycle to school last week - a bus that was delivering students to my school. It was so close it touched my elbow as it went past, how I sayed upright I do not know. Cycle-cam footage has been sent to the police.

And mine is only 3 and a bit miles  Hill in both directions though.

I was only 4 minutes slower this morning compared to the e-bike that helped me up the hill.

Been thinking about a cycle cam, not even looked into cost but would you recommend?

Definitely. It won't protect you if you are hit by a vehicle but I think drivers take more care when they see the camera on the front. I have found the police to be very sympathetic to footage I have sent in, either "offering" the driver a re-education course or prosecution, or even just showing them the footage and having a quiet word so they can see their actions from the cyclists perspective. When they are unable to take action they keep the details on file in case the same driver gets reported for something else.

My camera was the cheapest I could get off eBay, it was under £15. Its like this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/38554467...dStoF4mtNgsRRBfrz6sO7RnA==|tkp:Bk9SR5LVgeH3YQ
The battery only lasts for 70 minutes but my commute is only about 15 minutes, the picture quality is good and with it attached to my handlebars it's steady enough to see numberplates, I bought a bigger SD card so that I could record at a higher resolution.
