HSE inspecting school for radiation

I would hope in an accident / incident event the RPO would give you the contact details of the RPA so you can liaise direct - one to confirm with your RPO

Thanks

Tony

Just going through L093 to get some more forms as we have filled up the spaces.
I note that it says if you are in the CLEAPSS scheme you will have no direct contact with the RPA, but go through the RPO.
However when you get to the bit about accidents and emergencies it keeps talking about speaking to your RPA, no longer mentions the RPO. I have no idea who the RPA is, I've only ever dealt with the RPO.
it's listed as,

Ralph Whitcher Part-time Adviser and RPA for CLEAPSS

in https://science.cleapss.org.uk/Resource/G001-A-guide-to-CLEAPSS-services.pdf

thanks for that. I contacted our site manager last week as although we are below 1% in this area we do have a boiler room that is below ground level.
They have not responded but I'll keep the CLEAPSS doc for when they do.

We are in a less than 1% area but we have a boiler house that is sunk below ground level by half a storey. I have advised site team that if we get a visit they will ask us about Radon and all we can do is send them to the Site Manager.

I have suggested this could be avoided if the site team send me copies of the relevant paperwork and I'll put it in my ionising sources folder.

I used the ticketing system to make the request so that I have a record, but I did not get a reply.

Hi Nick,

I would raise it with SLT using the HSE prosecution as leverage to ensure the area gets monitored in the autumn term.

Thanks
Tony

Hi Paul,

I've not heard anything definitive from HSE to say they have stopped inspecting schools, however they are introducing a new system for application for IRR17 'Registration' and 'Consent Practices' this October which may take up the inspectors time for a few months.

The HSE radiation team have advertised for x4 new inspectors to take on this increase in workload - my feeling is that a good start for new inspectors in the field is to visit lower risk premises - schools perhaps?

I also think the HSE will also want to see if their prosecution in July of a school for historic radon exposure to staff and students has had an effect.

Thanks

Tony

Cleapss latest bulletin

HI Hobnob - I read that too, which is why I said maybe they are taking a break for a while to concentrate on the new process _ personally do not think they have stopped school inspections outright.

Thanks

Tony
