How many technicians working hours do you have?

We are trying to make a case for more technician hours. We have 1800 students (age 11-16), about 350 science lessons a week, with anywhere between 100 - 200 practicals, 14 labs and only 3 technicians, one of whom is part time.
We have been asked to find out how many combined technician hours a week other secondary schools have on average to see if we fall short. What sort of hours are normal for you?

There's some information regarding this on CLEAPSS - G228 (section 3), but the data is quite old.

Thanks, Wow, that's seems much better! We only have 103 hours a week but 17 teachers, many of whom are newly qualified and need lots of help!
Where in the country are you? They have just told us to compare it to schools in the north (not really sure why that would make a difference )

1400 students 11-18. We do individual science for all students to GCSE (approx 200 students in each year group) plus 60 - 80 A level students (Y13) per science per year.
1x 37h/w Physics tech - 5 labs
1x 37h/w Biology tech - 4 labs
1x 35h/w Chemistry tech (me) - 4 labs
1x 16h/w lower school Chemistry tech - 1 lab

3 FT techs (all with 18+ years experience), total of 111 tech hours per week (3 x 37 hours)
1800+ students, inc A-level
425 science lessons per week, usually 100-250 lessons with a practical component (prac or demo or apparatus needed [eg quadrats] per week (sometimes more, very occasionally less if the plan has a worksheet-heavy couple of lessons that coincide.....). Often we prep 60 in a day.
13 labs, 3 computer suites, 3 "normal" classrooms, 24 teachers.....

Don't use us as an example if you want more techs....!

Edited to add: re the "where are you" query - we're in South Yorkshire....

Oh My God! :surprised: That sounds exhausting. We are all 15+ years here too and wondering when they plan to bring in someone new as I think the department would fall apart if one of us went (it does when we're ill ;)). We are not getting any younger!

2 techs totalling 74 hours in term time, I'm TT+10 days, other tech is TTO
currently 9 teachers (usually 10, but one half-scientist left mid-year and wasn't replaced so they condensed classes) + 1 trainee
I think around 1300 students including 6th form
About 170 science lessons per week (again, there are usually about half a teacher's worth more)
Hertfordshire
Number of practicals varies wildly. We've got 21 next week, I think the most we've had this year was about 50, in previous years when we had fewer newly qualified, practical shy teachers and more barmy, experienced mad scientists we could easily do 15 a day for weeks at a time.

Lessons 266 Week A
286 Week B

We're in Leeds.

yeah use the cleapss guidance is it 0.65 tech hours for 1 hour teaching but I think that's what they suggest should be bare minimum and actually should be a lot higher. I'm 32.5 hours TTO 4.5 teachers 5 labs one computer room.

that should be very useful to show your manager and see if you are under. there is a table to help you work out too with what responsibilities are expected. its very useful. sorry i cant remember what guide it is.

I am in the north east
