How long does Oxalic acid last once made up?

  • Oxalic acid crystals (powder form) are stable if kept dry and stored in a cool, dry place.
  • Aqueous oxalic acid solutions (without sugar) are generally stable.
  • Oxalic acid solutions made with sugar should ideally be used immediately. If storage is necessary, keep them in a sealed container in a refrigerator (4°C or below), where they might last for several weeks to several months, depending on the specific formulation and how sensitive the application is to HMF formation.
  • If the solution starts to turn brown, it's a sign of degradation and should be discarded.

Fabulous, thank you.

Yes. I have a small container of oxalic acid solution that I use as an acid bath to wash any glassware that gets rusty or has permanganate stains on, and that's been sitting by the sink for months and it still works! :)
