First Aid Kits in Laboratories

Sorry to mither everyone again, but I'm again looking for help from you lovely folks.

We do have a first aid kit in every lab we have at school, which I currently have in the prep room for checking, but I'm wondering whether I should issue them back into the labs as we don't have any science staff who are first aid trained (and I don't want someone opening one up and trying to do it themselves).

The First Aider on call should have a grab pack with them so I'm wondering whether they're a liability rather than a help?

Thanks again for any insight in advance...:star:

We don't keep them in the labs here. None of the science department are first aid trained so there doesn't seem much point. There's one in each prep room and the first aiders have grab bags with them. We gave everything back to medical office who are in charge of all this stuff. It seemed pointless us being responsible for looking after them when they're not specifically a science resource and none of us are first aid trained.

Dammit man! I'm a technician, not a magician!
I have a full first aid kit and a burns kit in the prep lab. Several science staff are first aid trained, so having the one central place to get a kit in an emergency is quite helpful.

I am the only first aid trained member of staff in Science so all first aid comes through me. Teachers aren't even allowed to give out plasters  So I have my own kit on me at all times. I keep it stocked with supplies from the medical room.

Full first aid kit in the preproom as I'm the only trained first aider. Teachers have the emergency hazcards, E1a,E1b,E2a and E2b in the labs, not sure they read them, but most if it is common sense. I refill it through reception.

We used to keep one in each lab and one in the prep room. Even though most teachers are first aid trained we were advised by CLEAPSS to remove them from the labs and keep a slightly better one in the prep room.

Our first aid kit is kept in the prep room, makes sense as I am the first aider.

We have copies of E-cards on the lab walls.

Do you have a school policy that says there has to be one in each lab?

We only have one in the prep room and the upstairs lift room. I am a first aider and so is the Science TA. If we had them in the classrooms, everything would be stolen from them in a week and the box would go missing. The first aid kid should be in plain view if you have one. In the event of an emergency and there are no first aiders around, (maybe after school hours, cleaner for example) somebody may need that equipment, trained or not.

We don't keep them in the labs here anymore. Instead 1 is kept in each of the prep rooms, so 1 in Physics, 1 in Chemistry and 1 in Biology. None of the techies are first aiders anymore. All accidents are reported to the main office where there are numerous first aiders who deal with the issue. We are able to issue a plaster, give advice on burns and would be able to give instruction if eyes needed washing out.

Just prep rooms here, waiting for CLEAPSS to decide what the advice is.

Who restocks your kits?
I do, from the main kit inthe medical room. I like to do.my own as not everyone uses the same things

No, I've checked and no mention is made of it (which is either an oversight or it was put in covering the points made by everyone that unless there's a first aid trained staff member present in the lab, you're better off leaving them in the Prep Room).

It was the previous Senior Tech who did all restocks and checks as she was the first aid coordinator, so I'm going to assume it will be whoever takes over her first aid role. Otherwise it will probably be me with a downloaded checklist.

We have a kit in the prep rooms, the teaching staff aren't first aiders and the kids have a habit of helping themselves, especially the scissors for some reason. We have a 4 page accident report which is supposed to be completed for all incidents, so the teachers don't have time for that (neither do we). Fortunately accidents are few and far between. (he says tempting fate)

Checking etc is yet another of the fun tasks which falls to the techs.

Thanks again lovely folks, I'll keep an eye on Cleapss but for the interim, I'll just make up ones to hold in Prep Rooms and let the first aiders know. Stay safe out there people.

We have first aid kits in all labs despite none of the teachers being first aid trained.

They give out plasters to students all the time despite me telling them we're not supposed to, if it stops a student complaining about a paper cut they don't care.
