Do you have a chat with new teachers at the start of the new year in the prep room??

I do a science service induction with them, run through the CLEAPSS check list, hand out keys for the gas guards and safety specs and generally talk them through deadlines, ordering on LabLogger and what we expect them to do re: practicals like returning them tidily, not disposing of chems down lab sinks etc.

Takes about 40mins to an hour depending on interruptions for questions and how many times I have to repeat myself :laughing:
 
We have whole of science meetings plus subject meetings. Also teachers must trial an experiment they have not done before. I'm very involved with new physics teachers and non specialists who may be experienced teachers but with less Physics

If there are clashes new teachers and non specialists get highest priority. Lowest is head of physics and head of science (also a physics teacher)
 
I have a quick chat with them during one of the department meetings on the Inset days, about 10-20 minutes.
 
I wouldn't say that I have a chat. it's more normally the new teachers find me (or the students are brought into the prep room during their induction) and they can then ask questions
 
This just made me realise... This is the start of my 6th school year working here and I've never had to deal with a new teacher.

Lucky You. I've been here 18 months and had to deal with a new teacher in both of the Septembers

Insanely sensible. That's probably we don't do it. :laughing:
 
My HoD schedules in an hour meeting with me for all new starters during their induction period - some new starters need the whole hour, some only 15 minutes.

It is then encouraged for the first few weeks they come to discuss practicals with me rather than blindly putting things in lablogger but more experienced teachers tend to do their own thing. Early careers teachers have a timetabled meeting slot with me on a weekly basis for their first year at the school which we both agree to make ourselves available for to trial practicals if necessary.
 
I should add that my only experience of a new school year as a tech was last year when I was a solo tech until October Half-Term so things may differ this year
 
I do a health and safety induction with all our new starters (inc. student teachers). ECTs I expect to talk their kit sheets through with me until they've done a year, just to make sure they're RA-ing and they're confident.
 
Totally! I show them the order system and offer them any help if they need it. It's important to make them feel welcome because I think probationers and new teachers are more scared of you than you are of them :P
 
After enrolment (College) they realised class sizes for Physics were a bit too large so yesterday we were informed there would be an extra block of physics and the new maths teacher (used to be physics elsewhere) would be teaching one class of first years. So this is the first time I've had a new one and they popped in to see me today (normal timetable starting tomorrow we're currently having "fun" team building days for the new first years)

New Physics(/Maths) teacher "How do I order a practical"
Me "well we've only had one physics teacher for years so there's never any clashes or anything to worry about and we chat every day so she usually just says can I have this then and I say yes. so just give me a couple days notice and we'll see how we get on :laughing: "
 
Used to happen, I'm still waiting to meet one of the new teachers, but my door is always open unless I'm somewhere else so it will be locked but the other place I'm in will have an open door until I leave to go somewhere else.
 
Nope.. A brief introduction then my HOD fills them in on everything else. (Just the way I like it)
