Fridays off.

I don't think a lead tech should have to be in all the time.

I have to be home for my child going to and leaving school - I think it would be discriminatory to insist on full hours.

I personally don't do as much prepping - more the H&S and paperwork, organization etc that goes with bringing a department up to scratch.

The lead tech gets paid more for the responability & experience they hold - not the hours they work.

I think you are very lucky to be allowed to do this, here we all do prepping Senior included as this is the main priority. Not allowed time off in term time and expected to be in school whenever the students are. Why would it be discriminatory to insist you do full hours, what was the job when you took up the position.

Same as Mollytwodips- I can technically arrange a day off in term time for a very special occasion but it's very rare that I'd even ask, and I'm here from before lessons start til well after they end so I can prep, tidy and be available in case of accident.
At my old school (before I became a lone tech) as senior I was always expected to be in when school was on for safety reasons- if something serious comes up (like a big chemical spill) you want the experienced person in to deal with it.

It's definitely not discriminatory to not give people special treatment for having kids- it's not like you have a disability that limits your work hours (which would legally require reasonable adjustments- and you could argue that if it's possible and reasonable to flex time and they won't that's discriminatory) or that they're refusing to flex it for giggles because of your ethnicity, gender or other protected class (including pregnancy when you're actually pregnant/on maternity but no that doesn't carry over for a full 18 years).
If you as an employee want to organise your life around being a parent, it makes sense to take a job that doesn't have requirements that clash with that.
And as an employer if it's possible to flex time for parents working a certain position they should be flexing it for everybody in that position who wants to organise their time a certain way for any reason- elder care, transport restrictions, pet care, other commitments, whatever.

(Ahem, sorry for the essay, as people may have spotted this topic is a personal peeve XD)

I'm lead technician and in 8-4 (ish, averaged out over a week) TT minus 1 week. My team of 3 are in less than me and are TT minus 2 weeks

It's a legal requirement for employers to accomadate childcare issues if possible.

I was poached from another esablisment - so could kind of stipulate my hours I wanted to work.

Yup, I'm a solo technician who covers all bases up to & including 6th form.
5 days a week term time + 5. 38 hrs.

I can go out during day or a bit early if I need to get stuff, which is often.
I need to be there by 8:00 anyway as staff almost always say "can I just have . . . " & I like to accommodate as many practicals as I can without knackering myself.

I work 37 hrs a week.
When I first started I shared the post with the old senior tech who went part time. I was paid as the senior tech for the 2 days she wasn't in. The other 3 days I was paid at a lower grade.
That's what I would like to happen at my school. I want to cut my hours to have a day off in the week. My suggestion would be that for that day another tech could take on that role and be paid accordingly. I have been refused flexible working if I wanted to stay as a the senior tech but can do it if I wanted to go down a grade. That would mean recruiting a new senior. The difference in pay is negligible.

Legally you have a right to ask and the employer has to consider it, however no one has the right to flexible working and it can be refused.

If you were employed as part time that is a different case.
Yes that's what I did and was refused as they wanted a senior tech to be all day, everyday (TTO). I can only cut my hours if I was willing to go down a grade. I worked out the difference in pay if I went down (and didn't cut my hours) and it was negligible. I am going to ask about sharing the role so that the other tech can be senior on the day I wont be in and be paid accordingly, though I doubt they will agree to that.

I'm full time, term time. My colleagues are part time, term time.

Not come across a senior tech who isn't in all week. It's doable if you team are in to cover the day you want off, I would struggle as none of my colleagues are here for the start or end of the school day.

I totally agree with you. I've been refused flexible working unless I go down a grade, therefore giving up my role as senior tech. They will have to recruit a new senior. Their argument is health and safety and the senior needs to be in everyday to oversee this! Pretty sure we are all responsible for that and not just the senior. My HOD is all for me cutting my hours but the powers that be aren't!

Our senior tech does 8-4 five days a week term time only. That's how the school want it and to be honest with how busy the department is that's how we need it.
Our senior tech tried to drop some hours last year and wasn't allowed unless she stepped down from being senior. I've also had the conversation about the role when she retires next year and have been told it will stay as 8-4 mon to fri.

Thanks. Yes that's my exact situation. I need the reduction in hours so I am going to step down from being a senior ( the rate of pay is negligible if I
stepped down and did the exact same hours, but will be cutting so pay WILL go down a chunk). The trouble is, they are having difficulties in recruiting a new senior!
